In this story, there are two rounds in the lottery. The first round includes the head of the family, which is the individual that draws. The point in this is to determine which family will be picked for the ceremonial stoning. Next, comes the second round which is a drawing among the relatives with only one exception being that of Mr. Summers which is: “Daughters draw with their husbands' families, Tessie," Mr. Summers said gently. "You know that as well as anyone else." This drawing is one of importance because we easily begin to notice fear, which takes place when the Hutchinson’s “win” the lottery. As a young girl whispers: "I hope it's not Nancy..." this makes the scene hectic.
