Two Reasons For The Lottery

Decent Essays
In the short story, The Lottery by Shirley Jackson, a small town is holding the yearly lottery in June when Bill Hutchinson has the winning paper and his family will draw to see who will win the lottery. The two reasons for the lottery are a sacrifice to the gods to make corn grow (Old Reason) or the winner could be getting money for winning (Current). To start, the story takes place in the 1900s and the lottery is still used to make sacrifices to make crops grow. Old Man Warner says, “Lottery in June, corn be heavy soon.” (page 22 line 260-261) which proves that they are having the lottery to have their corn grow fast. On the other hand, the current purpose of the lottery is to make people pay to enter and the winner will win
