The fact that I practiced weekly using the new language vocabulary
The language perspectives of Malcolm X "Homemade Education" and Jimmy Santiago Baca "Coming into Language" give their accounts on the experiences they had in developing and accomplishing their vocabulary and language skills through self- exploration and determination. Malcolm X was an African American male, his perspective of language came from the streets of Harlem, his life as a hustler made him street smart. Before his incarceration he felt and expressed in his essay that he was one of “the most articulate hustlers out there” in the streets he could persuade people to listen and he felt he could be heard. When I first arrived back to America at the age of five, I did not know a word of English. A few months after my arrival, my English enhanced dramatically because of my teacher’s motivation and guidance; she encouraged me with her stories about learning English. In order for me to tell my story, I need to think about the rhetorical situation. With the completion of my essay, I was able to achieve the Course Learning Outcomes after I wrote my story.…
So not only was I starting to get a grasp on English, but my parents also wanted me to learn Spanish. They finally decided that they should stick with me learning English at the time.…
English Learners/Dual Language Learners and Literacy English learners and dual language learners are individuals whose first language is not English. They likely have a dialect or home language that is different than the language being spoken or taught in the classroom. The ability or expertise of these language learners can be very diverse. ELL’s are called language “learners” because their native dialect is different than English and they are “learning” the English language. Most educators use the terms English learners, English language-learners, non-native English speakers, and second language learners.…
My native language is Spanish, and I began to learn English when I was in Pre-K. As a young child, I did not know being bilingual would be of such importance. Nevertheless, now that I am young adult, I fully understand…
Coinciding with literary works and their applications, English colloquial languages undeniably create a socioeconomic divide in the United States and in the pursuit of the American Dream. Throughout America, several derivatives of English are spoken, but because these sub-languages are not standard or articulate English, they are viewed as subordinate, subpar, sub-American. To be articulate, as poet and activist Jamila Lyiscott explained in her spoken word essay “3 Ways to Speak English,” is to have an “intellectual sounding flow” when speaking. This flow affects how the ethical credibility of a speaker is perceived by an audience, and how the speaker’s walk along the path to the American Dream can easily be set astray. For speakers of colloquialisms…
When it came to Spanish I was able to understand it and sort of speak it but I was not able to read or write it, that comes later in my life. A moment in when language (Spanish) really changed a lot in my life was when I got into high school and toke my first Spanish class. This changed a lot in my life because taking this class would help me read and write Spanish while also improving how I pronounced words and spoke so that it would become fluent. As I grew up I did learn more and more at home so speaking Spanish became easier but it still had a lack of fluency.…
Since moving from Dominican Republic to Puerto Rico when I was 11 years old, my live has been different in a good way. When my mom decided we were going to move to Puerto Rico, I was excited because I really liked the country and the people there. For my little brother was a new adventure, a new school, new classmates and what he liked most was that his school was close to the beach. He wanted to go every day after school.…
Developing Vocabulary Vocabulary development is something that seems very easy to teach, but in all honesty is one of the most difficult skills not only to teach but also to master. From a young age students start building their vocabulary through several strategies. The most obvious one is of course reading. Children of all ages love stories and fairytales. They love to sit down and listen to their parents or teachers go on and on about situations that would only happen in their dreams.…

Spanish is the most-studied language in the United States. Some people might ask a student that studies Spanish, why that student would study Spanish or what would studying Spanish do for that person. Well, first of all, that person that should mind their own business because who cares what others say about that student learning Spanish. That person should worry about himself instead of the student. Despite what some people say, studying Spanish can be really useful.…
Week One Journal Entry In my first week of learning Spanish I decided to study where it is spoken and about the culture in those areas. Language is a huge part of culture so it is important to learn about it. Spanish is the official or co-official language in over 20 countries and millions outside those countries speak it. I spent the week researching information about the Spanish culture, including their food, traditional clothing, music and dances.…
During my childhood, I had to learn English at my elementary school because I come from a family who spoke mostly in Chinese. At school, I spent most of my time in a program called ESL for people whose English was their second language. While others were at an advantage, I was at a disadvantage. Everyone else seemed to learn faster, but it was more difficult for me to catch up since English was my second language. In elementary school, I remember reading many Dr. Seuss books that impacted me.…
A good practise while learning a foreign language is the reflection. One has to think critically what are his/her own strengths and weaknesses in order to be able to improve and reach his/her objectives. The aim of this review is precisely this – I will expose the key factors of my English learning, then I will indicate the ways that I find most and less useful to learn a language, next I will list my strong points and my weak spots and finally I will give some ideas to ameliorate my command of English as a foreign language. I started studying English when I was six years old, which means I have been learning it for thirteen years. Until 2015, I studied it in two different environments: the school and a private academy.…
