Animal abuse is something that can easily be looked over or unheard of. It is a constantly growing issue today that has become completely out of hand. According to PAWS, animal cruelty is when someone hurts an animal or does not care for an animal responsibly, like not giving a dog or cat food and water. It is against the law to be cruel to or harm animals, even your own pets. It's also called animal abuse, or neglect. Though several people do not consider these things to be animal abuse, they very much are. What most people underestimate is how severe animal abuse actually is. Unfortunately, more often than not, animal abuse goes unreported. According to Pet Statistics, there are twenty-two forms of animal abuse reported. Though that is a …show more content…
At first glance, such cases may seem less egregious than a single, brutal act of violent abuse, but severe neglect can mean extended periods of extreme suffering resulting in permanent injury or death (Animal Neglect Facts). Every year thousands of domestic animals in America are neglected, killed, and physically abused. Approximately thirty-two percent of these reported cases are neglect/abandonment (25 Years of Animal Abuse). From 1980 until 2014 there have been 19,448 animal abuse cases reported. More often than not, cases go unreported. Over the last ten years, thirty percent of tracked cases have been neglect. There are some issues common to cases of animal neglect. The first issue being is that it is often associated with human neglect involving a child, elder or another person. Animal fighting is a contest in which people urge two or more animals to fight for the purpose of human entertainment. In some instances, one of the animals may be a bait animal used for the ostensible purpose of sport or training (Animal Fighting Facts). According to the help page, approximately sixteen thousand dogs die each year from dog fighting. Some people are even so sick that they will abduct other people’s dogs and force them to fight. People also have businesses and do these things out of their homes (Humane Society). Although there are no excuses for animal fighting, there are some issues that are common to animal fighting cases. The first issue is that Animal fighting activities attract other serious crimes, such as gambling, drug dealing, weapons offenses and money laundering. Children are commonly present at animal fighting events. Pet theft to acquire bait animals is also a common byproduct crime (Animal Fighting Facts). Another issue is that trainers may viciously kill dogs who refuse to fight or who lose fights. There are several killing methods and they include shooting, hanging, drowning and electrocution.
