In November 2016, Donald Trump became the 45th president of America, replacing Barack Obama. In January of 2017, Barack Obama stepped down and let his successor take his place. The 2016 presidential election, in Gambia, did not transcend as smoothly. Multiple news sources followed the difficult transition of presidents in The Gambia. In my lifetime, I have never witnessed a president not stepping down, after defeat, I never thought it was possible. The Gambia election opened my eyes as to what happens, in other countries, and how different those countries are from my own. Looking at the history, evolution and post-colonial features, of The Gambia, to inform how this country got to where it currently is.

The current state of The Gambia is still behind that of the western world. The health conditions are poor due deficient sanitation and unclean water. Malaria and AIDS are still common diseases in the country. Although there are many hospitals throughout the country, the most are located in the country’s capital, Banjul.
