Two Different Work Environment

Throughout my entire life, I have only had three different jobs, and I was able to experience working in two different types of environments. I was seventeen when I had my very first job, and I was a receptionist at a hair salon. The environment at that place was more serious because it was high end, so they had more of an upper class clientele. I would say that this type of environment is one that I am the least comfortable in because I felt like I could not really be myself, and I was always afraid of making a mistake because I felt like my boss would not be at all lenient with me, so I was afraid of that career risk. (Waldron & Kassing, 2011) Of course, being professional at work is extremely important, but even behind closed doors with my coworkers I didn't feel like I could be myself because I was a lot younger than all of them. So, I would say that this environment makes me uncomfortable because I am not comfortable with identity risk that comes with it, as well as the career risk. The working environments at these two places were much more relaxed than my previous job because I was working with people that were closer to my age, so I felt like I could be myself with these people that I had things in common with. I was actually friends with my coworkers and always spent time with them outside of work. I didn't have that identity risk at these jobs that I did when I worked for the hair salon. I also feel like I didn't really have that career risk, because my managers were more lenient when it came to making small mistakes and their feedback would be positive and constructive, so I did not feel as nervous about messing up at all.
