Two Different Types Of Toughness In Sports

(Intro) The Webster dictionary defines toughness as enduring strength and energy. When considering the human side of toughness, I think of two different types of toughness. The first of which is physical toughness. When you think of physical toughness you often think big muscles, broad shoulders and a mean look. The ability to get hurt and not cry. The ability to lift heavy items. The physical specimen that stands out the crowd. While physical toughness is more of a material attribute. The other human toughness, is at times less noticeable, but, in my opinion a stronger asset to an individual. (Intro)“ Mental toughness is to physical as four is to one.” - Bobby Knight. This quote is saying mental toughness is stronger than physical toughness. I believe it’s true, because when you're playing a sport such as basketball, I have personally experienced that others may have the God given physical attributes that others may not have such as height. At times this may be used against you by not only the opponent, but may also be re-emphasized by a coach or teammates. Unfortunate, but it happens all too often. As I get older and experience different situations and challenges, it tests my mental toughness and makes me a more mentally tough individual. I believe most successful athletes and successful business people posses a higher level of mental toughness. Not quitting, looking for objective ways to deal with a problem, continue to enhance a person’s mental toughness.
Mental toughness or physical toughness. They both have their positives. Physical toughness can be a good physical characteristic and may be a quality that helps with making a person’s life healthier. Mental health, is something that is probably tougher to achieve and evolves as you’re faced with personal challenges. Being both physical tough and mentally tough help make you a well rounded
