We have all experienced guilt to some degree. When I look at this spiritually, it all makes sense. I remember the story about the man demonically possessed that Jesus delivered in the hills. When you really examine this, you see the psychology clearly. Either depression or guilt drove the man into isolation in the first place. When he became isolated, demonic forces were able to get into his head.
There are two types of guilt. One type of guilt is called appropriate, the other is called neurotic. “Appropriate guilt stems from any behavior that actually damages or diminishes the wholeness of persons. It is associated with harm to persons resulting from the misuse of whatever degree of inner freedom one possesses in that situation.” When we intentionally go against our values and morals, it triggers appropriate guilt.
The second type of guilt is neurotic guilt. When an individual experiences this type of guilt, it still feels like appropriate guilt. Nevertheless, neurotic guilt is not associated with the feelings after causing harm intentionally. This type of guilt is associated with fear of punishment or rejection. They use the word of God to validate their opinions. People who deal with self-righteous consciences are master manipulators. The fact is that these people tend to have low self-esteem. They are attempting to mask their emotional wounding of inferiority. Consequently, they get their worth out of subconsciously and consciously by diminishing the values of the people that are around them.
People with underdeveloped consciences lack appropriate guilt, anxiety, and sense of responsibility. They either lack or have insufficient self-control. They tend to be shallow and display irresponsible behavior often. This is seen in people who have come from loveless homes. This is also seen in people who got their own way in their homes as children. An absence of discipline is equal to the absence of love in the sense that it produces this
