Animation is an art form that through style and presentation, can bring something

magical to the viewer. Though it can be underappreciated, animation provides a new way to

explain a story to all its viewers, which can stay with them for the rest of their lives. Walt Disney

Animation Studios and Studio Ghibli are two of the biggest contributors to that, ranking as some

of the most successful animation companies in the past years. Movies like Frozen and Finding

Nemo from Disney, and My Neighbor Totoro and Princess Mononoke from Ghibli, are highly

renowned across the globe for solid storytelling and beautiful animation. These two studios,

though similar in the work they do, have differences underneath the surface that set them

drastically apart from each other.

Disney and Ghibli have both been praised for their expert

storytelling, but with such a large gap between what both desire to accomplish, their stories are

anything but similar.

With such differences between Disney and Ghibli, one would think their viewers to be

for one and against the other, but that doesn’t seem to be true. Fans of animation, though usually

having a preference, enjoy both studios’ films for different reasons and rarely ever criticize the

best motion pictures of either studio. Even the companies themselves don’t hold any malice

towards each other, even with being competitors within the same trade. This can be shown with

the collaboration between the two for the movie Ponyo, with the use of Ghibli’s art and story to

make the movie and Disney’s large reputation to sell it. As the years go on, changes are bound

to be made to each studio, but it will always hold true that Disney will be the powerhouse of

entertainment and high quality visuals, and Ghibli will be the master of deeply moving and

artistically interesting
