There are two categories of reinforcement; primary and secondary. Primary reinforcers are food, drinks, and things that provide happiness; they do not have to be learned. These primary enforcers are considered biological, or something that occurs naturally. Primary reinforcement is often referred to as unconditional reinforcement. Experiences and genetics can affect how reinforcing things are. Secondary reinforcement is sometimes referred to as conditioned reinforcement. It gets its control through association with primary reinforcement. Anything that increases behavior is considered a reinforcer. Behaviors that come after a reinforcement will increase.
