Twixter Research Paper

The word Twixter was coined by Lev Grossman as a term for adults ranging from 18-29 who are in-between adolescences and adult hood. According to statistics, there are five attributes a person should attain to be considered an adult. A person should be moved out of parent’s home, have finished school, obtained a steady job with benefits, eloped and have started a family. As a true twixter myself, I have to disagree with those markers. I am currently 25 years old and I’m still working on achieving some of those and then there are others I’m not sure I want to. Moving out of parent’s house is a given. Most people before or by the time they are thirty will want to have moved out of their parents and have a place to call their own. School is a tricky one. I believe that everyone should try to strive and be the best they can be, but not all people have the means and help to get a better education. A beneficial job with or without an education is rare to come by between the twixter ages. I have friends will college degrees who cannot find work and are stuck working minimum wage jobs. Not so much selfish, but a person “savor[ing] the pleasures of irresponsibility” (159). By observation, most adult lives seem mundane; repetitive day in and day out. Adult life just does not seem appealing and it is inevitably going to happen one way or another, so why rush it? Twixters can relish in the fact that they are “not responsible for anyone else or to anyone else” (159). The fear of settling for something less than what you desire is scary whether it be about jobs or love life. Twixters “’have this wonderful freedom to really focus on their own lives and work on becoming the kind of person they want to be” (160). I think a lot of it stems from wanting more for your life than what your parents
