Twitter was founded in 2006 and played a major role in both the 2008 and 2012 elections with over 175 million people using Twitter worldwide. On Twitter, users can tweet up to 140 characters and these tweets can be retweeted by other users. Retweets allow for a candidate’s message to reach more people and thus are very important. Currently, Donald Trump has tweeted over 33 thousand tweets that reach 12 million followers. Trump’s influential media presence contributes to his popularity as the Republican presidential candidate. Although, a group’s tweets and opinions on Trump is not necessarily positive, it will still accurately represent their views. Twitter is a free social media site that allows anyone to create an account as long as they have internet access. Optimists of social media’s use believe that internet sites, like Twitter, have increased the involvement of politically inactive groups and have allowed their input to contribute to the public’s general opinion on Trump’s campaign. For example, the younger generations, people with less income or historically less politically involved groups, are more likely to participate on Twitter. This has an effect on Trump’s campaign because Twitter makes it appear that Trump has a higher percentage of support than he actually does in real life. Another problem with using Twitter for determining voter preference is that Twitter is more anonymous than a face-to-face conversation which results in a willingness for users to share their negative views. On Twitter, users can isolate themselves based on their political views by controlling which candidates they want to follow. This is detrimental to tolerating other views and supports the idea of partisan polarization. Partisan polarization is the idea that voters only seek out information that agrees with their personal beliefs and avoid information that does not support these ideas. Lastly, Twitter is a poor indicator of voter preference because not all users can or will not vote in the presidential

Twitter communications tend to replicate existing communications channels in that they are one-way static monologues delivered by the campaign (Williamson, Parolin, 2012). But because their brevity denies protracted dialogue (Godnov, Redek, 2014) and effective use relies on crafting a “bite” that can be “re-tweeted” they serve as a tool that allows campaigns to deflect discussion of the issues and focus on a personality-based campaign…

The Twitter War President Trump is only significant through his use of social media to connect to the People. Trump is listened to and followed on twitter because he uses the POTUS account, and people follow the president. He also only posts very controversial things which attract people’s attention and has them respond in either negative or positive ways. Finally, Mr. President just cannot help the fact that he is a spoiled and entitled brat who likes to rant on a social media platform also used by twelve year olds who rant about how their parents will not let them out of the house after ten-thirty or how they ‘need a man’ who can provide for them.…

In fact, it would seem to be quite the opposite. It is still quite common for young adults to post their political opinions on social media websites such as Twitter and Facebook, as a study published by the Pew Research Center states that, “66% of social media users (39% of American adults) have engaged in one of eight civic or political activities with social media.” Political debates also often ask the viewers to get involved with the debate itself by giving out hashtags for users to join in on the conversation, and some television channels like CNN have tweets go across the bottom of the screen that have the opinions of the viewers watching. Advertising campaigns are also more rampant and expensive than ever, as according to an article published by NPR, also known as Non-profit radio, it is stated that, “Political TV ad spending will top $4.4 billion for federal races this year, up from $3.8 billion in 2012.” Despite all this, it has not translated to more votes for the elections.…

In attempt to sway electors to vote for him he said “The trees are the right height” (Nordlinger, 2015). This is an absolutely desperate attempt to gain followers, by flattering the citizens who can vote and their state. This another form of propaganda, by convincing balloters that the candidate has similar interests to the electorates. The candidates create several social media accounts to be more “in the loop” with their followers and the people they want to vote for them. The importance of social media has been very present in America in the past decade or so.…
