Facebook is where you go to connect with old friends, Instagram is a great place to see how famous people live, Pinterest is a massive arts and crafts class, and Twitter is a bit of a wild west. When Twitter was founded its core principle was free speech, which meant anybody could say anything to anyone. Ultimately, this lead to Twitter being a heaven for trolls. Twitter is very limited in that one can only post 140 characters per individual tweet. Twitter also makes it effortless for one to become lost in confirmation bias. While one will probably follow people that they know personally, it seems natural to start following a pro-feminism account or an anti-feminism account depending on one’s views. Once a person starts polarizing their accounts in one direction, they become vulnerable to the rhetoric of set beliefs only. This is damaging as they may not understand the full story of an incident like Colin Kaepernick refusing to stand during the national anthem.…

One example of an “earned media” strategy is Rand Paul’s announcement that he would boycott the Fox Business debate after he was relegated to the “undercard” debate and instead host an interactive town hall via Twitter. During the debate Paul took questions from Twitter and recorded video responses. Both the original announcement and the Twitter event earned the campaign attention and news coverage. While this attention will not earn Paul the nomination, it did give multiple opportunities to share his message before and during the debate. Paul made a number of media appearances.…

The topic I decided to discuss for this research paper is social media and how it affects law enforcement agencies. Technological advances in the recent decades has led social media to be used in everyday modern life. For law enforcement, it has opened up new opportunities to share information with the general public. As our guest speaker mentioned to us on Thursday, the Fort Wayne Police Department uses Twitter and Facebook to make citizens aware of any detours or roads they may want to avoid if possible. Most officers want to be out chasing the bad guys and not behind a desk, but if used correctly, officers can use social media to their advantage.…

Hate speech is ‘the advocacy of hatred based on nationality, race or religion’, and with it taking place over many platforms especially online media, the hatred is becoming increasingly ‘acceptable’. Social media sites such as Twitter allow users to express their opinions towards others without feeling like there are any consequences for their actions. The anonymity seized from being hidden behind a screen supports that deindividuation is one primary cause of online hate-speech. ‘Deindividuation is when people lose their sense of individual identity’ (Cook, 2012).…

From the internet anything can be forged information from photos to what some bloggers write about, and social media is a hotline to all the tampered images and facts / statistics about news and general information. In all seriousness, when people rely on information from social media sites they begin to diminish their principles and personalities. Because of Twitter people were less afraid to express themselves. On the new invented social media site people were free to say whatever they wanted to whatever audience they wanted. If they wanted everyone to see it they would have a public page but if they wanted only people the knew to see it they would have a private page where they regulate who follows them and sees their information. The only restriction there is to twitter is the 140 character count, meaning that you can tweet or post whatever you want as long as it does not exceed 140 characters. People were also becoming more aware of the differences in people because of the diverse cultures of people joining the twitter community.…

Sexting is the involvement of sending explicit photos, images, and text messages or e-mails by using a cell phone or mobile device. "There has been 20% of teens who have sent or posted nude or semi-nude photos or videos of themselves and a 39% of teens that sent sexually suggestive messages via text, email or instant messaging.", according to Guardchild.com. To diminish these percentages one can take steps as to inform their child about self-respect; so that they won 't lower their self worth from sending explicit photos and messages, to enforce the laws against sexting, and for parents to monitor their child 's devices. By doing so one can see a significant change in the amount of teens sexting, and that over time sexting will be non existant.…
