Today, gamers have a variety of ways to share their gaming experience. A gaming community called Twitch is where gamers can stream their gameplay to an audience. They can talk to their audience about the game and even stream for charities or their own personal donations. Since Twitch and video game streaming started gaining popularity, it has changed how gamers share their experiences. Twitch wasn’t always a video game streaming website. It originally started as a video streaming website known as Justin.TV. Justin was founded in 2005 by Yale student Justin Kan. Originally Justin Kan set out to make Justin.TV similar to the television show called “Big Brother”. Justin Kan, along with three of his friends worked together to produce a 24/7 life-cast stream, in which they would stream and document the on-goings of their day to day lives. (Cook). Eventually, Justin.TV allowed for users to sign up and stream for themselves. These streamers would stream a variety of things ranging from, life-casts, animal cams, music casts, and video game streams. (Kan). They can stream directly from the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One consoles by using software built into the systems. If a person is streaming on a computer they must download software that is not made by Twitch. The most commonly used piece of software is called “Open Broadcaster Software” or “OBS” for short. XSplit is another piece of streaming software that allows you to stream to Twitch, as well as a few other streaming websites.
