On September 11, 2001, the United States of America experienced the worst terrorist attack on record. Members of an al-Qaeda terrorist group hijacked four U.S. airplanes midair and used them as weapons to strike various targets. The Twin Towers (also referred to as the World Trade Centre) located in lower Manhattan, New York City were struck with two of the hijacked planes killing nearly three-thousand people and injuring many more. The impact of the collision caused the building to ignite and eventually collapse. Amongst the injuries and casualties caused by the direct impact of the attack, people have suffered because of the aftermath of the event due to environmental, economic and social implications associated with the catastrophic conditions. The severity of the attack cause a nationwide increase in airport and anti-terrorism security which directly affected the long-term procedures for travel and safety.

During this time of mass panic more than 55,000 calls were made to emergency services call centre to report incidents and to gather information about the disaster or family members that may have been near the scene at the time. Due to a lack of knowledge and understanding of the events that transpired during the attacks, those tasked with informing the public were thoroughly under prepared to answer the callers questions regarding the fate of loved ones or evacuation plans for surrounding areas that may have been susceptible to hazardous airborne materials such as asbestos, fibrous glass and other heavy metal
