The fake letter claims that Olivia would like it if Malvolio wore cross-gartered stockings. In this scene Malvolio approaches Olivia trying to show off his cross-gartered yellow stockings thinking that Olivia likes him and the way he has dressed up. This backfires and she thinks that he is sick and needs to get sleep, “Wilt thou go to bed Malvolio?” This line shows how truly confused Olivia is from the prank. Malvolio responds, “To bed? Ay, sweetheart, and I’ll come to thee.” Shocked, Olivia expresses her concern for Malvolio; “Heaven restore thee!” Malvolio does not understand why Olivia doesn't appear to like him. Olivia turns to Maria, “Good Maria have this fellow be looked to. Where’s my cousin Toby? Let some of my people have a special care of him.” This causes Malvolio to become even more surprised and offended. He has no idea that this is a prank and does not comprehend that Olivia does not really love him. The theme of love and confusion is very strong throughout the play Twelfth Night. We were able to get a much better sense of how maddening the play really is when we actually acted out the characters in the different scenes. I was able to see how the characters could be so oblivious to the prank when I was actually acting out their roles. The selfishness of some characters causes a chaotic scene for the rest, although it is a very comedic
