In the play he is tricked by Sir Toby Belch, Maria, and Sir Andrew Aguecheek. Malvolio is tricked into believing that the wealthy lady Olivia is in love with him and has written a letter professing her love for him, though he was not supposed to find it. As a result of this letter, Malvolio begins to wear yellow garters which Olivia find undesirable and irritating. Malvolio believes that he can eventually marry Olivia and become Count Malvolio. Malvolio eventually is kidnapped by Sir Toby Belch and Maria, he is brought to a small house and is put into complete darkness. During his stay in the mud filled trash heap in which he was thrown into, he was mentally tormented by Feste the clown. Feste used his acting skills to pretend and successfully trick Malvolio into thinking that he was a priest. During this time Feste would switch between his priest persona and his normal self. Towards the end of the play, Malvolio is released from his imprisonment, after this he goes back to Olivia’s estate. When he gets back to the estate he bursts in, but as he has been imprisoned for a while, he looks very much like an extremely sick rat. Once Olivia sees him in this state she is shocked so much so that she has very few words to say, though he not only shocks Olivia but also everybody
