The behaviour of high class and low class characters are demonstrated through the words and actions of Olivia and Feste. In Shakespeare’s play, Valentine speaks of Olivia’s words and announces, “But from her handmaid do return this answer:/ The element itself, till seven years’ heat,/ Shall not behold her face at ample view;/ But, like a cloistress, she will veiled walk.” (I.i.25-28). This quotation explains how Olivia will mourn over the death of her brother for seven years. The evidence behind this quotation determines how the behaviour of Olivia leads accordingly to poor decision making skills. Though these two roles are played by one character in Shakespeare’s play, Viola’s role is considered to be a higher class than Cesario’s role. This is proven when she declares, “Conceal me what I am, and be my aid.” (I.ii.53). This line spoken by Viola points out her knowledge of hidden identity. Due to the conditions of gender roles in the Elizabethan era, women had no voice and were considered weak, however the disguise and intelligence of Viola into a male character leads into her freedom and strength. With Viola’s wise thoughts and actions of disguise, it is shown that Viola’s role is to be of a high class
