In the play “ Twelfth Night,” even though Olivia is being woo by one of the most powerful man in Illyria, she did not let the power and riches overthrow what she truly feels; which is the love for Cesario. Olivia fell in love with Cesario as soon as they met. Although there are so many obstacles that are facing this feeling, such as Cesario is not really a man, and he is also not in love with her. She did not let it stop her because there is still a way to fight. For instance, Olivia is the one who’s in love with Cesario so that means she has to make the first move to achieve what outcome she desires to happen. Olivia decided to send Malvolio to “ run after that same peevish messenger, [because] he left [a] ring behind him.” ( act 1. Sc. V, line 307-308). Olivia thought that by doing this Cesario will come back to tell her that he did not leave that ring. Through this Olivia will have more chance to talk to him. In this action Olivia showed courage that not a lot of men possess. Additionally, Olivia fought for Cesario because his presence makes her think that “ ‘tis time to smile again.” ( Act 3, Sc. 1 line 133). Cesario is making her happy and he is giving her hope and something to live for, because after her brother and her father died she had no one else. Through Cesario, Olivia changed her attitude towards life. Furthermore, Cesario also made Olivia stronger, by giving her the courage to stand up against her cousin, Sir Toby. For instance, when Olivia saw that Sir Toby is hurting Cesario, Olivia did not think twice and stopped Sir Toby from hurting Cesario. She stated how Toby is an “ ungrateful wretch” ( act 4, Sc. 1, line 49) for hurting the one she loves.
