Comparison and Contrast of Development of a Theme throughout a Play and Movie Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night has been interpreted in many ways since its original production in the Renaissance era. It has been adapted into books, movies, and abridged videos but this is comparing and contrasting the theme of being betrayed through love’s development in both a movie and play adaptation. Both the Twelfth Night play adaptation and the Twelfth Night movie adaptation deal with the theme of being betrayed through love but they do so in such different ways. Even thought the servants know the truth, they go along treating Malvolio like is insane and mad. He is later betrayed at the end of the play. Olivia revealed the person who truly wrote it; Maria. The theme is progressed through Malvolio when the servants lock him a darkened box and get Feste, the fool to act like Sir Topas. They were messing with him when he wanted paper and pen to write a letter to Olivia. The theme is progressed through the character Antonio when he happens to get arrested asking Cesario for his purse. He gave the purse to Sebastian earlier in the play confusing Sebastian and Cesario because of they happen to be identical twins. In the Movie, they progressed through the same way but with Malvolio, the movie poorly shows the servants reaction to Malvolio being tricked. In the play, while they break the fourth wall talking to the audience. The movie depicts it as they are talking to one another rather than to the audience. They show Antonio more as a commoner than a pirate but it shows Antonio’s disguise better. Also it shows Antonio, the Duke, Orsino’s men on a police chase with Antonio jumping onto a chariot hiding himself until he is caught, when he again protecting Cesario in a duel thinking he is
