Twelfth Night - Similarities Between Viola and Olivia
Shakespeare’s play, Twelfth Night, introduces two main characters in Viola and Olivia. Regardless of the fact that they share a few differences, Viola and Olivia are two very similar characters with a lot in common. One way they are similar is their personalities. They are both strong-willed and stubborn women. Olivia shows how she is stubborn when she argues with the Clown about her way of mourning. Her mourning methods are very dramatic and exaggerated, as she says that she plans to mourn for 7 years and can not love due to it. Similar to this, Malvolio shows and demonstrates Viola’s stubbornness, when he says about Cesario: “He’s fortified against any denial” (1.5.139-140). This can be interpreted as showcasing Viola’s commitment to Orsino and how she refused to take “no” for an answer. In addition to their comparable personalities, their statuses in the play are quite alike one another. While they show it in different ways, the two share another similar trait being their rich backgrounds and high status. They both are of noble birth. Olivia showcases this in her daily life with her extravagant lifestyle while Viola cannot due to her unfortunate situation. From that quote by Orsino, we can decipher that Orsino finds Viola attractive, even in her current state as Cesario.
