In the play, Twelfth Night, by William Shakespeare viola survives a shipwrecked where she was separated from her twin brother, not knowing if he is dead or alive, in Illyria. Being as resourceful as viola is she decides to cross dress as a man and take a job at Duke Orinos court. This shows that viola is able to adapt to different things. She had a well-orchestrated plan in a foreign place, and that she is a strong character. “O, then unfold the passion of my love, Surprise her with discourse of my dear faith: It shall become thee well to act my woes; She will attend it better in thy youth Than in a nuncio 's of more grave aspect.” (1.4.25) This quote shows when duke Orsino asks viola to get Olivia to fall in love with him. Viola being Cesario promise the Duke Orsino she will get Olivia to fall in love with him. “I 'll do my best to woo your lady. [Aside.] Yet, a barful strife! Whoe 'er I woo, myself would be his wife.” (1.4.42) This quote shows that viola is conflicted because she actually loves the duke. Even though she loves the duke, she still went about her job and started convincing Olivia to love Orsino. Even when Olivia reveals that she is in love with Cersario, which is really Viola, viola doesn’t use this as bait to try and get the duke for her self.
