Twelfth Night Analysis

On September 24, 2017, I attended a performance of Twelfth Night, which was presented by the
Wichita Shake Sphere Company and was performed in Wichita Scottish Rite. Twelfth Night was directed by Kevin Sower. Stage Manager was Amanda Denning and the costumes were designed by Jane Tanner. The play lasted for about two hours. And for me the two hours went by so fast, that I didn’t even realize it. They reason behind it could be because the play was very alluring and interesting! “Twelfth Night” is a story of a young Viola who has been wrecked in a fierce tempest off the shoreline of Illyria; in the process she has lost her twin sibling, Sebastian. She masks herself as a boy and expect the name Cesario for cover. Consequently masked, Viola

Even though he couldn’t do much on the setting as the Wichita Scottish Rite lacked a lot of space. Amanda Demming the stage manager should have included more props and sets as the stage looked completely empty with only just a wooden bench where most of the actors acted on .The play likewise lacked lighting, it was the same boring lighting used throughout the play, I managed to see some theatrical lights on the top balcony, some floodlights and scoop lights which could have been used to make this play entertaining for the audience. However, the reasons behind the simple lighting could be because this play was a free nonprofit play and it would have been very expensive in order to use those theatrical lights. Costume Designer Jane Tanner suited most of the characters perfectly without any wardrobe malfunctions. Speaking about costumes Tanner could have improved the Dukes costume in order to make him look more prestigious and elegant from the normal civilians of Illyria. Tanner could have made the Duke wear a Full suit with a proper coat and a small Coronet rather than just waistcoat and a …show more content…
Olivia played by Rooslana Rusk was a wealthy and admirable woman who attracted many men in Illyria who wish to marry her. Her family’s expiry has made her pain stricken and she has declined to see any individual who does not reside in her family unit, and announced that she will be in grieving for a long time. Rooslana suited the character very much as she looked very attractive and her costume looked appropriate as she was wearing a black gown representing the rich culture back in the days. However, it was very hard to catch some words she pronounced during the play as she spoke fast and she was very soft

In consideration of Viola portraying herself as a man named Cesario, her role-playing is very complex and requires more from her than what might be perceived. In Viola’s case, she has to maneuver being able to talk to Olivia knowing that she is the competition for Orsino’s love, as well as being able to present herself to the person she loves as a man who does not have any attraction other than that of a servant. For Viola’s manipulation of the other character’s in the play to be successful, she must be able to follow some of the same patterns as Feste, including noting the mood of Orsino or Viola, his or her type of character, and the setting that takes place when Viola performs her role as Cesario. Ultimately, Viola’s plan to end up happily with Orsino relies heavily on…

In the movie She’s the Man, Olivia is also in an emotional state but because she just got out of a break up and instantly falls for Sabastian for being different from most guys she’s used to. In the movie she loves that Sabastian is a lyricist, and will say anything to complement him which she awkwardly does with his usic, “Those are really good. So honest.” Olivia takes any advantage to either make Sabastian fall in love with her or make him jealous, which is comedic because she has no idea that its Viola. In the end of both the play and movie Olivia finds love with the real Sabastian, which allows Duke to finally realize that he loves…

This became noticeable by the lighting which became brighter and the background music which was originally mono-tone became more enthusiastic. Throughout act two and three the musical came to life. The supporting actors had a nearly perfect performance throughout the final two acts. The props and background for each scene was spot on and if you payed close attention throughout the entire play it was almost if you were witnessing the acts happening in real life. There were minor mistakes and the only real problem other than the fact that the leading actor Terry was still underacting was my seating.…

    Twelfth Night Deception

I think one of the central points in Twelfth Night is to show that appearances aren’t really what they seem. Basically what Shakespeare’s construct expresses is that appearances can be deceptive in a way that we can understand. Deception in appearances is showed throughout Twelfth Night. The first is Olivia and Duke Orsino being deceived by Viola disguising as a male. An example of this is from the quote, “There is a fair behaviour in thee, captain; And though that nature with a beauteous wall Doth oft close on pollution, yet of thee I believe thou hast a mind that suits.…

The music was catchy and fit the mood of the scene, casting was spot on and costumes reflected that time period. The costume designer, Gay Hensley, did a particularly good job with distinguishing costumes meant for Robin Hood and costumes meant for the characters rehearsing. Gay Hensley, also added in pajamas to show that the cast was actually sleeping at the theatre. The lighting designer’s job also stood out to me. Spotlights were particularly noticeable during this play.…

Viola begins to fall in love with Orsino after being witness to what seems to be Orsino’s great capacity for love and passion directed at Olivia. Viola expresses these feelings to the audience after being instructed to convince Olivia of Orsino’s passion for her: “Yet a barful strife! / Whoe’er I woo, myself could be his wife” (1.5.41-42). Evidently, Viola is impressed with Orsino;s seemingly deep and passionate love for Olivia, and begins to experience an attraction for him. Unfortunately, these feelings only cause her grief because she can never express them lest she expose her disguise, and she must endure the pain of winning over another woman for the man that she loves, instead of having him for herself.…

During the play, one of the main themes is unrequited love. This always means that some would end up being unhappy as the person they love does not love them back. We see this between Sir Andrew and Olivia. Sir Andrew loves Olivia, ‘here comes the countess, heaven walks on earth’. However, Olivia does not love Sir Andrew as she loves Cesario.…

When she uncovers her true character and reveals it to Orsino, he still declares hislove for her: “Boy, thou hast said to me a thousand times/Thou never shouldst love woman like to me” (IV.i.279-280). He addresses her as a boy, but later asks to see her in “women’s weeds” (IV.i.286). The uncertainty of her gender goes to prove that gender doesn’t matter when it comes to true love. Orsino loves Viola when she is disguised as a boy and continues to love her when she identifies herself as a woman. The same feelings apply to Olivia, when Sebastian comes to Illyria.…

Throughout anyone’s lifetime there are ups and downs. Essentially a person’s life is like an emotional roller coaster and sometimes in life the person is up high and sometimes they are at the low point. She can see through other people's disguises or flaws, that not even they are able to spot. Some characters are deceived about their true nature. An example of this is that Orsino sees himself becoming "one self same king" of Olivia's "sweet perfections", fulfilling her sexual desire, thought and feeling ("liver, brain and heart"). He naively believes that he is in love with Olivia when he has never really spoken with…

So in a way Olivia was in love with another woman. So it really questions on whether this is true love or not in Shakespeare’s eyes because “we have no direct evidence of Shakespeare’s personal views” (). Towards homosexuality, but through the story it did show that it could possibly be. The characters that fell in love with Cesario…
