Energy Management is a process that can be utilized to ensure the effective and sensible use of energy and energy related systems to reduce losses, save energy, become sustainable, and more environmentally conscious. TVA (Tennessee Valley Authority) as a government owned utility should be cognizant and controlling of their energy usage and patterns while being a good steward to the environment. Energy Management has been a part of the company for some time, but there are things that could be done better and/or differently. Below I will suggest portions of TVA’s Energy Management Plan that could be changed or adapted to new methods.
TVA overall maintains a decentralized structure for the entire company but utilizes a more centralized energy management organizational structure. I believe that an Energy Management Corporate Energy Committee would be most appropriate for the company. In the past Internal Energy Management at TVA had an actual organizational rung within one of their Organizational charts, but with recent multiple re-organization efforts their IEMP (Internal Energy Management Program) as well as many documents or webpages referencing this were lost/broken. The policy statement should state how TVA strives to become one of the Nation’s top leaders in Clean Energy Production by 2020 as well as how they must implement reliable and cost effective measures to become a more energy efficient and environmentally conscious company while staying compliant with all required governmental laws and guidelines. Top management commitment has to be communicated regularly and in the correct manner including being passed down to lower management, front line supervisors and finally front line
