This is my sixth year of teaching 6th grade. During my first year of teaching 6th grade I didn’t even think about needing to teach my students about plagiarism. I thought that it was a conversation for much older students. It wasn’t until I had one of my students turn in a very impressive book report that I knew it was a topic that certainly did need to be addressed in 6th grade and now after a few years in 6th grade I actually feel like it is a topic that should be addressed with even much younger students. I didn’t have a program like Turnitin to assess the originality of the book report that my students turned. The process that I used to was to cut and paste a paragraph into a google search box and I was able to find the original source of the information. This was an important lesson for me to learn. I thought it was a great feature that the teacher could adjust the filters and settings to exclude things like quotes or bibliographies so that those kind of things wouldn’t be counted in someone's originality score. Another thing that I thought that was interesting is that when I submitted one of my previous assignments as a submission for the the fake assignment that I created, it was reported with a 99% similarity score. This made me think about whether or not it is necessary to cite yourself when you use ideas that you have previously used on other papers. I was talking to a colleague about this idea and she said that she actually had and experience with an assignment that she turned Turnitin where she had a portion of her assignment with a higher similarity score. When she asked her professor about her point reduction he told her that her paragraph was close to another student’s work. On further investigation the other student turned out to be her. The assignment had been submitted years ago and was under her maiden name. I am wondering if this is an issue that comes up very often with students. When I did a little research I learned that you should cite yourself when you are using your work from a previous class or degree just as you would any other
