Turning Points In The TV Show 'Beyond All Recognition'

Improved Essays
Beyond All Recognition was based around a group of friends whom had served in the army together. There were many turning points in the show, between Andy’s uncomfortable interaction with his ex-girlfriend Steph, the broken relationship between Denise and her husband Peter and Denise’s relationship with her brother. The actual show Beyond All Recognition was a TV show based on a conspiracy about soldiers having their memories wiped clean after a war. I had no idea what to expect when I walked into the room, but I enjoyed every minute of it. It tugged at many different emotions within me that I didn’t think that a theater production could do. I found it interesting that the Actors remained in character as they set up new scenes. I had never seen that before and I think the fact they stayed in character allowed the …show more content…
He attempted to get through to her and Meyer used the tactic of remaining soft and compassionate to her. Compassion and warmth are how I picture love and Meyer made sure that that landed on Denise as a character regardless of how cold she was toward him. The obstacle from peters stand point was that Denise had not opened up to him about anything, she wasn’t adjusting to civilian life very well, but he continued to try. Peter was worried that he would never have the woman that he married back. He wanted to work through it with her and I liked that even when Denise told him she felt like he babied her he still expressed his love and worry the same way while keeping her words in mind. Meyer used the Tactic of creating a relaxed environment with ice cream and general conversation to open the area to talk about their relationship and it worked. He began to open up to her first and didn’t mind that her words may hurt his feelings just as long as she was opening up to him was what mattered to

Each actor knew when and where they needed to have their lines or moves. Overall, the play was very smooth and flowing. The tempo of the actors were neither too fast nor too slow, it was very generally suitable. I could say their actions moved like one whole play. The stage design did a wonderful job of giving the audience a clear picture of what was going on in each act, and even the mood of the act. The props were well constructed, making them look real. The costumes were absolutely stunning. Each character was dressed in a way that portrayed what kind of personality they had and also boasted meticulously done face painting that made them look like people of the dead. All in all I couldn’t have been happier with the costumes of each and every character.…

All the actors seemed very professional and owned the characters they were playing. There was just something about Abele that caught my eye. For instance, every time Brittany Caldwell (Molly in The Gnädiges Fräulein) asked Abele to rock with her in the rocking chair she did not hesitate and went overboard. She exaggerated the movement and moaning to an extent that made you laugh because she was not scared to make a fool of herself. In addition, she had her own excerpt in the begging of the scene that really set the tone.…

Different voice techniques influenced the audiences understanding of each character and the tension of the scene. The actors were very convincing in the character they played. I observed that some actors played more than one character, each with different personalities and tone of voice. As well, in unhappy scenes such as the one were Hana's brother gives a speech at the Tokyo Education Center, long pauses were used to create meaning and emotion through speech. Actors tone of voice really paints a picture to who the character is.…

There was nothing noticeable that I recognized in regards to mistakes being made by actors. When I watched the rehearsal the actors seemed very sluggish while delivering their lines. One example that caught my eye was when an actor would have to interrupt another. One of them would finish their lines and there would then be a brief pause before the other actor would say their lines. I know that it was just a rehearsal, but it still a problem for myself…

Yet, that may not have been the worst thing because the whole point of this production is for you to connect to the “insane” characters and be able to put yourself in their shoes and feel their emotions. Additionally, the production did a really good job of working with the few set pieces they had. The use of lighting for the chats was cool and made it easy to follow along and understand. I was confused by the two different storylines set up in the beginning. It makes sense to hold off and reveal that Haikumom was Elliot’s birth mother until later to make it more dramatic but it made the shifts between different scenes…
