Turf toe is the spraining of ligament surrounding the joint of your big toe. It is most common in football players who play on artificial turf but can also be found in sports like basketball, wrestling, gymnastics, and soccer. The cause of turf toes is due to the jamming of your big toe as you jump, run, or forcefully use it. Wearing flexible shoes can increase your risk of receiving turf toe. Some symptoms are severe pain and swelling. There are 3 different grades on turf toe injuries. Grade 1 is a mild sprain with little bruising and swelling. Grade 2 is moderate swelling, bruising, loss of motion, and even a popping sound. Grade 3 is high swelling, bruising, and possible dislocation of the complete tear.
