The Influence Of PDA

As I sat curled up in an oversized pine-green sweater at the circular table closest to the cafeteria door, comparing history test results with my friends and watching the daily lunchroom chaos, I was dumbfounded at the affection various couples were showing to one another. To my left, a short girl with glowing cinnamon hair was holding hands with a tall boy sporting a Nike sweatshirt and a piercing jawline. To my right, two students with long, ebony hair were sitting at their own table as they made out. While most people would be disgusted at these public displays of affection, also known as PDA, as a nosey hopeless romantic, I was enthralled that I was able to witness the fondness that was occurring between two people, finding love in a world so full of hate. However, this appreciation of PDA is a point of view that few people actually hold. Whether seeing …show more content…
However, after a gay couple enters a bakery to order a wedding cake, the baker working rushes to the government meeting and states that she wants to deny basic goods and services to gay people. Instead of considering the real issues that their state is facing, the governor, who is running the meeting, completely agrees with the baker’s request: “Everybody out. This is the priority now.” Although this skit was intended to mock the film God’s Not Dead 2, it also showcases what our society actually cares about. Instead of attempting to fix real issues that are occurring in our society, such as homelessness and violence, which are both seen in public, we are focusing on public displays of affection and how to get rid of it so that we aren’t

The court’s decision compelling Phillips to create a cake for a same-sex couple infringes on his right to practice his religion how he sees fit. To Phillips, the cake is symbolic because it represents a sacred covenant made between man and women, as it traditionally has for years prior to establishment of same-sex marriage. However, there is a fine line between practicing your chosen religion and acting against opposing and popular beliefs. Phillips is not saying he is opposed to the rights given to the LGBT community but is simply making a point that many comparable companies have made: This case is not disagreeing with the rights given to the LGBT community, but rather suggesting that we offer the same protections to those with opposing, religious beliefs. In an interview with CNN, Phillips said: "I feel I'm being compelled to create artwork for an event -- an…

Mr. Landmann is the head director of the theater department at DHSHS and was able to execute a great show with the help of his students: Matilde Alejandro, Megan Johnson, Bethany Navarro, Luis Salazar, Nathaniel Esparza, Natalia Martinez, Angel Limas, Esmeralda Hernandez, Esmeralda Salazar, Nicholas Jacob Gamboa, Baylee Bryant, Jonathan Calderon, Erika Aleman, Jesus Hernandez, Austin Aguirre, Edna Escobedo, Anjali Singh, Angel Ramirez, Elijah Cross, Michelle Lopez, Alondra Campos, Sadie Cunningham, Joseph Arisco, Maya Souza, Efrain Flores, Kimberly Solano, and Zauriah Cotton. Love/Sick is a play that contains lovers and dreamers that look into the agony and the happiness that comes with being in love and in relationships. To begin with, the plot of the play was very straightforward and unmissable. It outlined all the effects, good and bad, that comes with being in a relationship as well as depicting all the dilemmas.…

The creators of the show South Park, Trey Parker and Matt Stone, have consistently satirized key subjects and issues that define today’s society. Whether it is through their Broadway hit The Book of Mormon, or episodes of South Park such as “The F Word”, Parker and Stone have brought light to both sides of particular arguments with satirical brilliance. As Martin Schulzke conveys in the article Contentious Language: South Park and the Transformation of Meaning, satire is a difficult genre to master, largely due to the fact that viewers may not understand its intention, let alone the reasons that underlie it (2012). Just as Schulzke argues, I believe that this episode of South Park brilliantly attempts to dissociate the word “fag” with homosexuality.…

The concept of romance has always been so intriguing to me. I've always been drawn to anything that involves romance, whether that be a painting, a movie, a song. As a straight female, my ignorance and privilege has often subjected me to having closed off thoughts-- especially in the case of romance, gender, and sexuality. Perhaps that is due to what I was exposed to or perhaps it was just my lack of understanding. When I first entered the exhibit "Ballad of Sexual Dependency" at the Museum of Modern Art my eyes were immediately drawn to a photograph that I have posted on my "romantic"…
