The general consensus among lexicographers is that word typology is etymologically derived from the Greek word typos or tupos (in plural tupoi), the archaic meaning of the word is blow. In course of semantic change tupos acquired the meaning of visible impression created by pressure of a blow, as a seal on wax or a die on metal or a copy, pattern, image, and example of something. The general significance of the term was form, probably a hollow form. or mold . Later diachronic development saw tupos passing through various stages of development, accumulating an amazing breadth of semantic range. Henceforth tupos was used in number of significations with different but similar meanings like impression, stamp, mold, die, cast, relief, graven image, form, shape, features, archetype, pattern, outline, sketch, prescribed form, a model to be imitated, general principle or law, general instruction, rule of life or religion, and rough draft. Tupos was significantly used as signifying the imperial written decision. This later led to etymological development of tupos as a legal term for summons or writ.

This later development explains the present understanding of typology as “the preordained representative relation which certain persons, events, and institutions of the Old Testament bear to corresponding persons, events, and institutions in the New”. Typology therefore refers to a consortium of types and anti types and the meaning structure of fulfilment of God plan in the New Testament figured in Old Testament The principle purpose of such a correspondence is to instruct by presenting a picture rather than data, just as teacher might seek to acclimate pupils to a difficult concept by presenting a simple illustration before treating the concept
