Tundra Essay

Most people know virtually nothing about almost every possible topic, and it could be easily included that most people don't know the fact that there are merely 200 plant species in the tundra, Earth's coldest terrain. The tundra is not what most people believe it is, for reasons such as misinformation, disbelief (the tundra is that amazing) and many more. First of all, there is higher biological production in water than on land (and there is life in the tundra), and second of all, the tundra is the only biome to have permafrost. Third of all, the frigidness prevents most flora and fauna from surviving. The tundra is very cold, but it is also dry, so dry that there is almost no snowfall, or precipitation at all for that matter, in the Arctic …show more content…
Animals other than lemmings include the Arctic tern, ermine, reindeer, mountain goat and musk ox. There is more biomass and, as stated in the introduction, more biological production, meaning procreation or reproduction, in water than on land. Vegetation is also quite scarce, though not as much so as animal populations. Flora only blooms for days to weeks, but at a greater magnitude. This may not be very interesting, captivating, astounding or even attention-grabbing to most, but there is more than what many individuals consider life in the tundra. Microbes have been found in the tundra ice, and these are the only life forms to be able to survive there. That is quite a bit less of a boring fact, and you are probably much more interested in the tundra (or at least hopefully you are).
It isn't just the life in the tundra that has so much depth. The hallmarks of this biome are (usually) precipitation and cold. All tundras have a very high amount of permafrost, and as a result, there is a smaller amount of soil. The temperature ranges from -25°F midwinter to 40°F midsummer. The alpine tundra has rainfall during the summer, though there is nearly no rain in the Arctic

Most of Antarctica is not a tundra, due to the ice there, but neither is most of Scandinavia. Warm water moves from the Caribbean Sea to Scandinavia, causing Scandinavia to be too warm (though not warm at all) to be a tundra. One city in Finland is not affected enough by this and, therefore, is a tundra. Finally, Alaska, despite being a tundra, has a high population (and seems to boast about it at times), and was purchased by the U.S. The harsh conditions of the tundra deters many people from moving to one or even visiting one, but why not you? Tundras include Northern Canada, the Arctic Archipelago, Alaska, Siberia, Svalbard, and many others. The warmest tundra that has yet been discovered is in Finland. Mountain devotees, climbers and hobbyists will want to travel to an alpine tundra, and will not have to worry about the frigidity, not because the alpine tundra is not cold, but because they have climbed mountains. For the more adventurous types, make sure to travel to a tundra for a very extreme

998973945 TUT0104 10/23/2014 Promoting Higher Education of The Canadian Arctic Environment For Inuit & First Nations Through reading Shelagh Grant’s book, “Polar Imperative,” the understanding I have come to is that the Arctic is a much more politically complex and socially diverse ecosystem than I once previously assumed. Previously viewing the Arctic as a barren frozen tundra with scarce species, including polar bears, seals, and fish. Through reading Polar Imperative my view has incorporated a political, geographic, and historical transdisciplinary understanding; which Island belongs to what country, and where the Arctic borders stand and how were they formed? Historically there were disputes over land rights and feuds about where boarders…

There are three distinct categories of tundra biomes, arctic, antarctic and alpine, all of which share the characteristic of cold climates. The ground is most often frozen, allowing for little plant life. Mosses, shrubs, lichen and other low growing plants are often all that can survive. Around 50 species of land mammals can be found in the tundra. These animals and plants have incredible adaptations to survive in the harsh, cold weather.…

The four basic cultural divisions of the Arctic consisted of the Unangan, Yup’ik, and 2 types of Inuit. The Arctic is a very harsh environment, so these tribes had to learn to live with the cold, and have strong self-reliance, cooperation, modesty, self-control, and share with others. The Unangan lived in large, permanent communities located on the Aleutian Islands. This was a relatively warm environment.…

Some of the biomes I have found is deciduous forest, coniferous forest, grasslands, savanna, tundra, and alpine biomes. Each one has their own average temperatures, typical animals and plants. Towards the northern part of the state there are more harsh temperatures and weather compared to the lower part. The southern part though gets pretty harsh temperatures and weather itself.…
