There are three distinct categories of tundra biomes, arctic, antarctic and alpine, all of which share the characteristic of cold climates. The ground is most often frozen, allowing for little plant life. Mosses, shrubs, lichen and other low growing plants are often all that can survive. Around 50 species of land mammals can be found in the tundra. These animals and plants have incredible adaptations to survive in the harsh, cold weather.
