Tumba, a small active young leopard, was running around an open field on a hot summer day in sub-Saharan Africa. Tumba and his friends were chasing birds and wrestling with each other. Suddenly Tumba stopped cold in his tracks. In the distance he could see three vehicles coming towards them. Tumba started running as fast as his little legs could take him. He kept running and running till he stopped and turned around. He saw nothing. No friends, no family, no poachers, all he saw was sand. Tumba’s heart sank. He was all alone with nobody to go to. He was walking towards a big tree to find shade when he heard a growl. From the back of the tree a huge, ferocious lion slowly walked out. “What are you doing, Kid?” asked the lion. “My family was attacked by poachers, and I ran away and got separated from them,” replied the frightened leopard. “Come here and lie down,” insisted the lion.

Tumba walked to the tree and lay down near the lion. The lion introduced himself as Mastiff, and Tumba told him his name. Tumba slowly started to fall asleep and Mastiff pulled him closed and started to sing to him. Tumba for the first

Mastiff made a plan on how they were going to find Tumba’s family. He also surprised Tumba with a huge zebra that he had killed while Tumba was sleeping. Tumba devoured his potion of the meal and was ready for his journey. They started by walking back where his family had last been seen. The walk was a bare, quiet, and hot one. Tumba used his extraordinary sense of smell to help guide Mastiff, a knowledgeable man of the territory, to find his family. The sun was setting and the two were extremely tired. They set up camp and stared at the stars. Tumba and his father had done this every night. Tumba started worrying about his father and family. He was scared that when he got back to camp that they would be gone. Mastiff started humming and singing and Tumba slowly fell
