Tufts Engineering Program: Personal Statement

Improved Essays
My interest was piqued when I learned of the depth and breadth of Tufts’ engineering program. With the opportunity of earning credit for a civil engineering internship, multiple specialized research labs, and courses spanning public health engineering to the legal issues of engineering and environmental law, the engineering community on campus seemed unique to me in its values of extending engineering past the math and science learning aspects to community involvement and real-life applications. As a person with interests spanning graphic design to tower designs, I saw my own desire to improve the world across all disciplines in Tufts.

I love libraries. In my family, it was tradition to visit the nearby library on weekends; these sacred places of learning were an important part of the community I grew up in. Those treasure troves of knowledge of my childhood taught me the importance of every person and book. Because those around me always encouraged my passion for reading, I had shaped my own intellectual curiosity. Once I realized that, I wanted to help others experience the same, so

I saw my younger self reflected in them. Therefore, I hoped to instill in them my love of reading through leading explorations of the library to help them discover their interests. Just as my fifth-grade teacher had brought my class to a nearby bookstore for a poetry reading field trip, I worked hard to give them fun experiences so they could learn to love learning.
It was only one summer, but I knew that I had made libraries important for them. Just as books are checked out, read, and returned, I learned from my childhood libraries that my actions can touch others as they pass on learning, watering seeds that will grow into fruitful trees and then an orchard of living libraries. Therefore, I continue to reach out and give back, making my own change as part of this

In this passage, Zadie Smith conveys a strong stance against the closing of libraries. She believes that libraries shouldn't be closed because they provide people with more than just books. To support her argument, she acknowledges counterclaims, uses logic, and uses emotion. To begin with, Smith addresses counterarguments to her claim. She acknowledges that, "... money is tight... and that libraries are not hospital beds and classroom size.…

In E.B. White’s correspondence to the Children of Troy, he states the following: “A library is many things. It 's a place to go, to get in out of the rain. It 's a place to go if you want to sit and think. But particularly it is a place where books live, and where you can get in touch with other people, and other thoughts, through books” (“Letters to the Children of Troy”). Libraries customarily serve as providers of vast arrays of knowledge, provoking introspection and musing enabling the creation of original notions serving as a haven for independent thought, but also as an area to exchange knowledge.…

Libraries all around the world are closing because of the advancement of technology that exists in our world today. There seems to be less need for libraries because of websites like Google, where you can get results instantly, where in a library it would takes a few minutes, possibly hours to find what you are looking for. Throughout the years, technology has become more advanced and it has introduced a type of book called an e-book, which is a book that can be read on electronic devices such as a kindle, nook, or even your phone. As more books are released online through e-books, less people feel the need to go out to a library or bookstore to obtain a physical copy of a book. This transition from physical copies of books to ebooks is a…

A great author once said ‘a good library will never be too neat or too dusty, because someone will always be in it, taking books off the shelves and staying up late reading them’. Does our library live up to this expectation? No. Why? Because of the lack of variety. The books in our library intended for our age are filled with the same boring, cliche magic and dragons.…

School Libraries. Since their introduction in the 19th Century, school libraries have played a huge role in the education system, and its purpose has remained largely unchanged since, catering for a range of different services, such as access to reading and study material and resources, hosting co-curricular events, providing us with functioning computers and printers, all easily accessible to all students and the teaching faculty. However, with the numerous advancements in technology, such as the introduction of the World Wide Web, which gives us the ability to instantly access online resources, the necessity of these libraries has undeniably dwindled over the past decade. As a result, the Australian government has recently announced the abolishment of school libraries in all government funded public schools due to its ineffectiveness towards a child's learning process, however, I believe otherwise. Libraries are facilities that are around to support students to expand their knowledge base through a wide range of both physical and online material.…

Chicago is known as the windy city, but most people tend to forget about the architecture fleets that Chicago has accomplished over the decades. In Chicago, people do not get the chance to see buildings that incorporate multiple different styles into a single structure. I didn 't realize how much was happening in the SESS that I didn 't know about. As a first year, I don’t know a lot about the inner workings of the college, but the AGM revealed just how out of the loop I’ve been. I have since read through much of the Constitution of the SESS and some of the Policy Manual as both someone who wishes to become more involved and as simply a citizen of the society.…

From a young age, I thought of the library as a place of wonder and learning. Every chance I got during my early school years, I went to the library and checked out multiple books at a time. The head librarian inspired me to pursue reading and lifelong learning. Every week during the scheduled library time, she always had a theme planned and would often decorate the library to correspond. The most memorable weeks for me were the Greek Mythology week and the Halloween week.…

How a library functions begins at the level of the individual patron. Each patron who crosses the threshold, be it the physical or the digital, is looking for a combination of resources that is specific to their person. The library as an institute is responsible for providing equal access to information to those who seek it through intellectual freedom, and receive education that furthers the learning of the patron either drastically or minimally. These are the most basic values on which a library is based; many subsequent functions branch out creating a web of interconnecting services available fro patron use. Libraries are primarily thought of as institutions where books, ranging in subject matter, are kept and available for the public…
