Tuesdays With Morrie Research Paper

Anyone can look around and see how in society people only care about the latest fashion trend or the newest electronics and so on. The culture today doesn’t focus on what is really important such as the people close to them or how to fulfill their lives with love. The book Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom is a memoir on Morrie, Mitch’s college professor. Morrie has ALS disease, and Mitch is doing his best to be there for him, for he never visited him after college because of his busy life as a news reporter. As they discuss different topics, a lesson or theme comes up that is important for lives across the world. All the items that are sought to have isn’t going to help people gain happiness and love. It’s the eighth Tuesday visit by Mitch. They are discussing the topic of money and other substantial items and their effects on people. Morrie interprets this that people affected are, “ so hungry for love that they were accepting substitutes ” having them “ embracing material things and expecting a sort of hug back “ (125). Morrie further explains that “ neither money nor power will give you the feeling you’re looking for”, it’s never going to match up to “ love . . . gentleness . . . tenderness . . . or for a sense of comradeship” (125). Society’s ideal items has aren’t able to achieve a full feeling of love and tenderness, rather they give short outbursts of pride and righteousness. Success is defined in many ways, but for me it’s having supportive, loving family and friends. A life that is fulfilled with happiness and devotion to others.
