Tucker 48
The tucker 48 was designed in 1948 by Preston Tucker owner of Tucker Corp. only 51 cars were made in 1948 and then it was discontinued due to negative publicity, the car had great ideas like adding a 3rd headlight or the safety feature that included popping the windshield out in impact.
Although Tucker had great ideas he was just not cut for what will happen to him in the next move which was his bankruptcy,Preston spent over 20 million dollars on his project and he only managed to make 51 models out,the models had problems such as leaks from the radiator after …show more content…
The engine was a flat 6 5.5 liter modded from an aircraft to fit the car.
The engine was placed in the back for extra torque and there was no driveshaft or transmission tunnel to intrude but it delivered 372 ft lbs in the rear,The car was rear wheel drive, which helped add extra torque.
Most innovative of all was the Tucker's back-to-front drivetrain. At its heart was to have been a new 580-cubic-inch 9.65-litre horizontally opposed six, with fuel injection and hydraulically-operated no camshaft valves, it was mounted in the rear and powered the car through torque converters at each wheel. It was to be mounted in a sub-frame held by half a dozen bolts that would allow it to be changed in 20 minutes.this was a great idea but unfortunately too good to be true so Tucker had to replace it with a Franklin flat-six intended for a helicopter. Converted to water-cooling and making 166 hp, it was eventually mated to a dual-torque-converter transmission.info from
