I am writing this cover letter to you in regards to Metrolinx Capital Projects Group (Planning) in Toronto. I am interested in this position because ever since I been exposed to societies’ environmental and transportation issues, and Jane Jacob’s principles of urban planning, I developed a strong passion for transportation infrastructures, public transit operations, and effective urban planning, with a vision to design better communities. I would like to work for Metrolinx because they are one of Canada’s largest transit organizations with an objective to plan public transit to promote sustainable modes of transportation in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA), which is also a vision of mine. From establishing the Union Pearson Express and the Eglinton Crosstown LRT to integrating Presto to form a uniform payment method for all transit riders in the GTHA; the work that Metrolinx does along with their plan of the “The Big Move”, has inspired me to bring my knowledge and skills to help Metrolinx build a more accessible and sustainable Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area.…
Disliking their living and working conditions, which were 20 cents a day for a 44-hour workweek in remote camps spread around the country, an estimated 1,000 men left Vancouver (by a freight train) in early June 1935 and headed across the prairies. After the trek had left Calgary, “the trekkers” picked up more recruits and when they reached Saskatchewan they were numbering an estimated 2,000 men. On June 17th when local governments refused to help the strikers they began to be disheartened by their lack of progress, so strike leaders decided to move the protest to Ottawa. 1000 strikers took freight trains and began the "On to Ottawa Trek”, but after receiving an order from Prime Minister Bennett, they were not permitted in the train cars. So a group of men led by Arthur Evans, walked to Ottawa to defend their position, while the remaining strikers waited in Regina.…
The Queen has joked that she was made to feel old by the new Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, after he spoke of her historic visits to Canada. Mr Trudeau, who is 43, had earlier toasted the 89-year-old Queen at a banquet for the leaders of Commonwealth countries, taking place in Malta. Justin Trudeau referred to the Queen's trips to Canada, including one in 1982 when she was welcomed by his father - the former prime minister Pierre…
Energy productivity was a common theme throughout the novel in which the author explains that the world would be closer to energy security through focusing on the reducing energy waste. Muller (2013) was adamant in the fact that using electricity to air condition homes costs more in the long run than by replacing the existing roof with material to reflect sunlight (p. 123). The writing was able to debunk some of the misconception behind certain environmentally friendly actions. One of the examples included the fact that public transit only is beneficial to the environment if there are more than 15 households per acre and that it was only beneficial for the environment if the transit was full (Muller, 2013, p.…
The Bloor-Yonge subway station the busiest station in the TTC with hundreds of thousands of people going through it every day. These huge crowds create chaos within the station during rush hours of the weekdays, making the average commuter frustrated and annoyed. While these times are testing of one's patience, the subway would not be the same without this epicenter of Toronto's commuters. The beginning of the day for most commuters on the Bloor-Yonge is remarkably difficult, with the walk out of the train full of jostling and elbowing, forcing the average subway rider to sidestep their way to the stairs. After this, they are huddled together with the rest of the passengers in the seemingly endless moving line for the stairs.…
Mission Statement Public transportation has its limitations and disadvantages in the South Florida region, Miami alone suffers from its limited routed Metrorail. Even Miami-Dade local buses of Miami are bound to suffer the same fate as drivers do… traffic. Miami is ranked 28th for high traffic congestion based on a worldwide poll by TomTom (TomTom International BV, 2016). The South Florida region suffers from car culture, which means people who live in low density residential areas are dependent on vehicles to travel one to another.…
During the 1800’s, Americans experienced a revolution in transportation. The Automobile gave Americans a new form of personal transportation. Trains, subways and elevated railways changed the way Americans traveled in cities. All of these forms of transportation helped create new opportunities The Industrial Revolution was a revolution because new technologies dramatically changed society and the economy. Toronto can position itself as a city with a higher quality of living than its competition, most notably its American competition such as Chicago, Boston, and Philadelphia. It is home to the third largest public transportation system in North America, enabling residents to go without a car if they so choose. This drastically decreases the city’s pollution providing better breathing air for its residents. The buses are electric hybrids and there is a public smoking ban which further contributes to the air pollution reduction. Forbes ranked Toronto 21st out of 50 of the cleanest cities in the world.…
Walkscore.com says, “The 141 cities with a population of 200,000 or greater have an average Walk Score of 49”. Atlanta and Houston’s walk, transit, and bike scores all fall within the same range from the high 30’s to high 40’s. I agree with this score because most people in these cities choose to drive their personal cars, or take Uber before relying on transit, walking or biking as a means of transportation. The main reason for this is because the time it takes to ride transit (i.e. MARTA) is relatively longer than calling an Uber or driving your own car. Likewise, a transit ticket costs about the same price as an Uber or gas in these cities.…
Some are not aware what may be the advantages of the future Rail Transit Project. Being that Honolulu is ranked third for the worst traffic in the Nation,…
Through looking to the population change during this period of time, Toronto CMA seems that will continue to spread out over suburban areas bringing challenges to the city specifically in terms of transportation. Behan states that transportation has encouraged imbalance in sprawl of housing and jobs which result in long commutes, increase of fuel energy and therefore air contamination. In addition, private transportation has become an essential good for residents in suburban areas due to long travels. As people have the needed of using cars, public transportation has been reduced to an ineffective expensive service that uses in vain sorts of energy. Moreover, traffic congestion arises as consequence of the increment of car ownership in suburban…
Americans took 10.7 billion trips on public transportation, the highest annual ridership number in 57 years. (Public Transportation 2013) 35 million times each weekday, people board public transportation (Public Transportation 2013). Therefore, public transportation is valuable to many civilians, as well as the company continues to rise. Public transportation, an essential on college campuses that need improvement because buses carry germs, buses lack seat belts and, bus drivers over crowd the vehicles. “On each square centimeter of skin there are about one thousand five hundred bacteria (Minnesota Department of Health).”This means that germs may or may not be seen, in this case individuals should wash hands or sanitize frequently.…
1.1 Introduction With heightened concerns about global climate change, energy consumption and carbon emissions, many countries all over the world have encouraged the public to choose public transportation rather than private vehicles to travel. In different modes of public transport, cycling increases in popularity in many cities, which brings healthy and environmental advantages(Goodman and Cheshire, 2014). Particularly for short distances in city, bicycle is regarded as an alternative transport to automobile and it may make an important contribution to the environment and public health(Faghih-Imani and Eluru, 2014). Furthermore, using bikes for recreation and commute is a fashionable activity for this generation. As a bicycle is a complementary mean of transport systems, a public bike-sharing system creates an opportunity to be integrated into public transport system and urban development.…
A sustainable city is a city designed with consideration of environmental impact, inhabited by people dedicated to minimization of required inputs of energy, waste output of heat, air pollution CO2, methane, and water pollution (A Sustainable City). In a world where society needs to be in constant motion to thrive, energy outputs are high and this equals pollution. There are some cities out there that have decided to look at the idea of reducing their energy outputs or find more efficient ways to create energy. These cities are called: sustainable cities. They are self-sufficient with their usage of energy and attempt to reduce pollution on environment.…
