At the beginning of the play we find out that the girls of the village went out and danced in the woods and Reverend Parris caught them. The next morning Betty Parris and Ruth Putnam were so shocked about being caught the night before that they faked being sick. Then the whole town exploded thinking that they were sick because of witchcraft, they blamed Tituba, Parris’s slave, because she was out with the girls the night before. To save her life, Tituba accused Goody Good and Goody Osburn of witchcraft and seeing that accusing others of witchcraft it saved Tituba’s life the other girls started to accuse different people in Salem. Abigail had an underlying reason for accusing people, she wanted to get rid John Proctor’s wife Elizabeth Proctor so that she could have John for herself. The whole time no one has any proof for the accusations the girls made yet everyone believed them and the citizens of Salem struggle to decided who is telling the truth and who is lying. Elizabeth finds out and John stops the affair because the knew the he did not really like Abigail at all and only lusted her. After realizing this John stopped seeing Abigail and Elizabeth fired her. Abigail did not like this at all because she believed that John loved her and Elizabeth was only jealous and in her way. She was so determined to get rid of Elizabeth and have John all to herself that she was willing to let innocent people die so that she can get what she wants. To expose Abigail John confessed to adultery and to prove he was telling the truth they brought Elizabeth to confirm his story. Elizabeth for the first time in the play lies and says that John was fateful because she thought that it would save John’s life.
