Readers realize the importance of truth over merely being happy. Consequently, to be fully human, truth involves not only knowing the good and the bad, but also experiencing happiness and sadness. In the novel, happiness and truth are separated. Truth or happiness? That is the final thought Huxley leaves the reader with. Now in 2017, our society is much more sexualized and materialistic than it was in 1978 when I first read the novel. However, disturbing as the novel was, it captured my attention and I understood and appreciated it much more now than I did when I read it in high school. I could relate to the issues that Huxley wrote about that can and do happen. As a nurse, I witness people taking mood altering drugs such as Prozac and Zoloft without a second thought. These medications change brain chemistry, and doctors are now realizing that they can cause complications such as withdrawal symptoms that can be severe and long lasting. These medications can lead to suicide. In addition, the United States has a serious opioid epidemic which has been incited by greed from the pharmaceutical industry. The DEA has tightened control on prescription opioid medications causing yet another problem of people turning to turning to street drugs such as
