In the movie “Meet the Parents”, Greg Focker (Ben Stiller), is given a talk by Jack Byrnes (Robert De Niro) because Jack is overprotective of his daughter whom Greg is dating. During one scene, Jack Byrnes gives a lecture about an innovative scale of measurement: the Circle of Trust. The conversation states:
Jack Byrnes: I mean, can you ever really trust another human being, Greg?
Greg Focker: Sure, I think so.
Jack Byrnes: No. The answer is you cannot. (Meet the Parents Quotes)
This is viewed by the audience as simply a comical dialogue, but Jack Byrnes may have the right idea. To trust someone is very difficult and can be nearly impossible at times. Although some are surprised that there is a scale of trust, psychologists have been using one since the 1980’s. The level of trust needed to tell a person their biggest secret is the fifth level of trust on the 5 experiential levels of commitment scale. This can be explained using the social attraction trust hypothesis, paired with a discussion of the three main factors of trust. This scale was created based on Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. Once the fundamental needs (food, water, and shelter) are supplied, humans are able to form relationships. Since humans are constantly observing exterior stimuli, they are enabled to make judgements and base their actions upon them. This collection of data is how one feels a sense of trust.
