The Importance Of Trust In The Military

Trust is an integral part of any institution, and is the foundation of any relationship and team. A military is a collection of several fighting forces which are often broken down further groups such as: Job roles, Brigades, Battalions, Platoons, sections and fire teams. Within every level of these groups and sub-groups, Trust is a key component on their ability to succeed and achieve their respective missions.

In this essay I will discuss the importance of trust from a military perspective, it is important for us as human beings, and its biological ties to the human psyche.

Trust is defined by google online dictionary as:

The military, especially the Army is well known for working within an environment of risk and uncertainty. Many great military forces have both succeeded in their missions and many have also failed. Although there are many factors behind these success and failures, some key factors that can define the strength of a military force are its Morale and Will to Win.

The will to win can be linked to the idea of Self-preservation. In order for us to service individually it is often in our best interest to work as a team to achieve the overall mission, and the ability to work as a team effectively is heavily reliant on the trust of fellow Section/platoon members. In chapter 5 of A Paper Titled Unit Cohesion and Military Performance, written by Robert J. MacCoun and William M. Hix, It is stated that “Unit cohesion is an important contributor to military performance and winning on the battlefield.”

Following from this, the paper refers to two types of cohesion within a military context. Task Cohesion and Social
