The roof types for gable and hip roof may be built in truss frame but for others roof types particularly those with cathedral ceilings, attic rooms, or attic storage are applying stick frame. Stick framing creates a triangle between the rafters and ceiling joist. In order to strengthen the stick frame, a collar beam is added at the middle. The rafters are usually installed directly above the wall studs. Besides that, truss is one contiguous double rafter or ceiling joist unit. The similarities between truss and stick frame is the strength is more or less the same however truss is lighter weight and uses smaller sizes of lumber than stick framing.
