In light of recent debates, many foresee a potential split in the Republican party. While Trump’s supporters amplify the support behind the Republican party, many believe those voters will turn away if he does not win the primaries, leaving the majority of the votes in the Democratic party. …show more content…
This was true with the exception of two speakers: Carmen Maddrey and Larry Holmquist. Maddrey stuck out like a sore thumb among the sea of gray suits, as was covered head to toe in shiny buttons and countless stickers on top of her campaign shirt, all loudly supporting the same candidate: Ted Cruz. The crowd, mostly men, dressed in crisp, gray suits loudly supported their second amendment rights and quietly whispered amongst each other as she took the podium. Surrounded by billboard sized campaign signs and a quiet crowd, Maddrey dictates why Ted Cruz is the only option for president as he holds the Bible in one hand and the Constitution in the other. “Cruz is a constitutional expert with an amazing resume and didactic memory, he’s never lost a debate since high school,” she says. “Did you know he was on his high school debate team?” Maddrey’s speech was the first to drown out the monotony of the oscillating fans in the corners of the room. The War of Politics: Liberals vs Conservatives Democracy in the United States American is made up of two main political parties, republicans and democrats. The common view of each party breaks down to liberals (Democrats) versus conservatives (Republicans) (Wilson & Dilulio, 2005). In the Republican primaries and caucuses as of March 10th, the number of running candidates have been narrowed down to four, Donald Trump being in the lead with a total of 458 delegates and Ted Cruz behind with 359 delegates. And the last two Marco Rubio and John Kasich with 151 and 54 delegates respectively (Andrew, Bennett, and Parlapiano). So far it is likely that last two competitors for the presidential nominee of the Republican Party will end up being Trump or Cruz, though no superdelegates have supported any candidate thus far. Though the former is in the lead, if Cruz can win many more delegates in the states he does win in, he can become the forefront in the running. As of now Trump has won in 15 states, while Cruz has won in seven yet is not terribly behind in the number of delegates, largely thanks to Texas.…

Party primaries and caucuses have historically produced the successful nominees for conventions which served to formally anoint the presidential candidates on the first ballot. But in the event of a competitive primary process, delegates at a convention could have more difficulty in reaching a clear majority of support for any one candidate. A brokering process then takes place, with multiple ballots a possibility. Had John Kasich and Ted Cruz not dropped out of the race for the Republican nomination, it looked as if the country was headed towards our first brokered convention since 1952. The 2016 Presidential election has brought into question some of the rules and procedures that govern over primaries and conventions.…
