While it is easy to and remove oneself from the wider world, it is truly inescapable. Even a rural farmer in Iowa is connected to the world by the internet and the agricultural market, to name a few examples. Globalization and other transformational developments like mass communication have allowed economic and social interactions across the world to flourish. This point is widely accepted by the public. However, the question of how morally connected people are to the world is much more contentious. The moral component is especially important to consider because it helps individuals and nations determine economic and social policy opinions. The most recent American election seemed to be as much a fight between nationalism and internationalism as it was between Democrats and Republicans. Although dangerous to generalize, especially with a topic as complex as politics, the “Trumpian” approach to politics seems based on an internally-focused, localist morality. The policy outcomes of this moral stance, based on American exceptionalism, include military unilateralism, protectionism, and a general restriction of transnational flows, both in terms of people and goods. …show more content…
I think this concept is true in my life: my morality heavily influences my overall political stance. Specifically, my Christian values tell me to care about everyone, no matter their ethnicity or background. Even when I considered myself to be more conservatively inclined, I have always believed in an international, multilateral approach to politics. In turn, I consider myself a global citizen, even though I am proud of my country. These two ideas do not have to be mutually exclusive because I strongly believe that strengthening international relations makes our country
