Leading America: Trump vs. Sanders

Two years ago the mainstream media introduced the world to a billionaire businessman, and a career politician, with vastly different leadership styles that both declared to run for America’s top role as the next U.S. President. Though these men had somewhat different campaign messages and different ideas of how they would carry them out, both had novelty approaches that had never been seen before in U.S. Politics. President, Donald Trump, and the U.S. Senator of Vermont, Bernie Sanders, both had fiery messages that spoke on the insecurities of the American people and where the future of this nation is heading in extremely different ways (Keith, 2016). With that said, I will attempt to compare and contrast

I bring this definition up because it emphasizes that leadership is a form of “human communication that changes attitudes and behaviors” to ultimately reach a goal, which falls in line with what these two presidential candidates attempted to do in this election. Both Trump and Sanders refused to fit their styles of communication into the way candidates have tried to influence the American people in the past. Instead, they both decided to aim their campaign messages at what they thought was the “un-heard” of our society that either feel oppressed by the government, or are scared of the direction America is heading in. Although they both had the same idea of whom they were trying to reach with their messages, they had vastly different leadership styles that they demonstrated in their communication. President Trump used a very authoritative and aggressive leadership style in his campaign. He sent a message that he was very confident with his ability to fix all of America’s problems, and if you opposed him he would come after you. For example, President Trump on the record has publicly harassed or criticized many famous people and things in the world including …show more content…
According to Daniel Goleman, the author of What makes a leader, emotional intelligence is a must in effective leaders because it helps them become more self-aware, self-regulated, motivated, empathetic, and better at relationship building (Goleman, 2017). Both Senator Sanders, and President Trump have displayed a sense of emotional intelligence during their campaigns, but not to the same degree. Senator Sanders is a man of high emotional intelligence, and he has demonstrated all five components during his campaign season alone. To give a few examples, Senator Sanders has displayed self-aware by exuding self-confidence in his fight against the political establishment that thinks his way of thinking is erratic and not possible. He has also displayed his motivation by spending 25 years in politics battling the way our government has handled things. He has displayed empathy by demonstrating his compassion for the many black lives that have been taken unjustly over the years. And Lastly, he has displayed his effectiveness in leading change by giving America a look at how many people are upset with our government and the way it is moving (Hazard, 2016). When thinking about President Trump’s emotional intelligence it is a hard thing to gauge. For example, Trump is somewhat

He has claimed that Hispanics are rapists, Muslims being terrorist, and women being pigs. The hatred and disrespectful attitude that Trump has isn’t fit for president. Recently at one of his rallies, he bashed at one of his own supporters simply because her baby began to cry. This shows that if Donald Trump was agitated at a simple, innocent thing, one can imagine the trouble, he would cause to America if a conflict…

John Kasich Trumps his Opponent The success of a presidential candidate depends not only on what his or her stance is, but what he or she stands for. Presidential candidate John Kasich carries a strong political platform while being able to present it in a professional and diplomatic manner. Candidate Donald Trump however, puts on more of a reality television show performance than a composed campaign in his pursuit of becoming the leader of the United States of America. Despite the horse race that this presidential election has become, John Kasich is a candidate with experience and accomplishments, innovative plans for the future, and a charismatic personality.…

The most interesting detail I learned from the books is that a candidate being able to connect with voters is one of the most important things a candidate must do to win the presidency. It can be seen in the 1992 election as Clinton was able to connect with people and make them believe that change was possible. Bush in this election was unable to connect and so even though he was president when the Berlin Wall and the Soviet Union fell, he was unable to win the presidency. I believe this connects quite perfectly with the current election. Donald Trump was able to maybe not necessarily connect with voters, but he able to connect more than Hillary Clinton was able to.…

Born in 1941. Bernie Sanders started out his political career in the early 70’s but wouldn’t come to actually hold a political office until 1981 when he won mayoral race in Burlington, Vermont’s biggest city by a mere 10 votes. Bernie ran as an independent and winning the race was a big shock for many knocking off a six-term local mayor. I chose to do this paper on Bernie Sanders because, over the last 6 years I have become heavily interested in the political state of this country and world. The people who are running for political positions are going to be the people in charge of the most powerful country in the world.…

The core definition of politics is “Everything related to the process of making governmental decision”. Between the two presidential candidates Hillary Clinton and Donald trump, I believe that Hillary possesses better political strategies. During the commander of chief forum of 2016, there were numerous ways in which Clinton surpassed Trumps political skills as well as finesse. Clinton spoke about the initiatives she plans to put in place as well as the goals she hopes to accomplish, such as providing better mental health care for veterans and obliterating ISIS, while Trump bashed other members of the American government, including Obama and Clinton, and spoke about what could have been if someone at some time had done something differently.…

In life, people are sometimes presented with harsh realities and difficult choices that cause us to take the most bearable action and hope for the best outcome. A recent example of this would most notably be the presidential election. Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump were among the least popular candidates ever to run for the presidency in our nation’s history. Yet, once the November 8th election date grew closer, the American people realized that one of these two candidates would ultimately be the president for the next four years. With that acceptance, voters held their breath and selected the candidate they felt would be the lesser of two evils.…
