Truman’s decision of dropping the bomb on Hiroshima wreaked havoc across the United States. While being in office for only three months before he had to make this decision, Truman knew it was going to be an important and life changing choice. Some people believe that it was one of the worst decisions he could have made. On the other hand, I believe that dropping the bomb was beneficial to not only then, but to today’s society as well. By dropping the bomb, it saved countless lives, strengthened the United States’ reputation, and shortened the war. Before the bombing, Japan did not look at America as a threat. Japan clearly thought that they could defeat America if they continued to fight. Gar Alperovitz a professor at the University of Maryland stated, “By the early summer of 1945, Japanese leaders knew they could not win. But they fought on in hopes of securing better surrender terms (Alperovitz).” Japan was uneducated about weapons such as the atomic bomb. In fact, no one had ever even heard of an atomic bomb until the United States had used it against Japan. This demonstrates how advanced the United States was in comparison to other countries. It also impressed the Soviets at the time of the bombing. “We need to recall the events of Aug. 6, 1945, with vivid clarity. The United States bombed its way into global dominance. “The Japanese began the war from Pearl Harbor. They have been repaid many fold and the end is not yet (Al Jazeera).” On December 7th, 1941 America lost more than 2,300 Americans. Had Japan not attacked us, there could have been the possibility that Truman would not have decided to drop the bomb on them. For years there had been conflict between Japan and the United States. With such an exceeding amount of tension between the two countries, something was going to eventually explode. This also benefited America’s reputation. Although Japan had attacked us first, America attacked them back twice as powerful.
