The Truman Show explored how media alters and shapes what we see as a reality. It demonstrates a good model for how the media takes control of us. In sociology, we learn that the majority of people believe in the reality shown to them. This is represented in The Truman Show. To Truman, the world he lived in was real to him, but it was not the real world.

Truman was born and raised on live TV. Since Christoph and a group of producers created Truman's world they instilled his beliefs, values and what was deemed normal in society. Truman's world started to fall apart when the light fell and then he slowly came to discover the truth when he realized everything was on a loop and no one reacted when he did something out of the normal. Truman struggles with the issue of discovering the truth of his reality throughout the movie. Christoph took complete control over Truman's life. Christoph created Truman's society by manipulating Truman's perception about what the social norms are and what he desired out of life. He controlled every detail of Truman's life: who he interacted with, who he married, his friends, his neighbors, and coworkers. In doing so, he created Truman's values and beliefs with the help of these people. Christof and the producers determined Truman's socialization. Since they went to great lengths to keep Truman in a fake reality, they kept him from his freedom. He was made to believe he was free but really had limited options and freedom everything was controlled by Christof. By using his father's death at sea, Christof instilled a fear of the water to keep Truman trapped in this fake reality. Since Truman developed a fear of water, he believed that it was his choice to stay in Seahaven. To create Truman's reality and the world, the actors had to go out of their way. Why did they try so hard? Because Truman's reality became their reality too. It was a 24/7 job so to them Truman's world became theirs as well.

Peter Weir’s, “The Truman Show” plot is constructed in a particular way that focuses on the protagonist, Truman Burbank (Jim Carrey), who grows up in an entirely fictitious life. From the moment Truman was born his life has been filmed 24/7 and broadcasted to millions of viewers in the most popular television series, “The Truman Burbank Show.” The community Truman was born into forces him to believe he is carrying out the life of an ordinary person: attending school, making friends, getting married and working for a local firm. This community, Seahaven, is actually an enormous stage set in an enclosed dome filled with cameras recording Truman’s every move. All of the people and living animals in Seahaven including his best friend, parents and…

History should remember Harry Truman as a man that was given the position of the president of the United States because Franklin D. Roosevelt died, and would not have been elected if it was not for Roosevelt’s inability to campaign on his own. Truman was hired by the Roosevelt’s because of his great campaigning ability, and since Roosevelt was in a wheelchair, he was the man for the job. Truman was given the role as the president of the United States because he was the Vice President, not because he was capable of getting the job done. Truman was sworn in as the president during WWII, and there happened to be a bomb ready to use just as he became president. As a result, Truman did not have any idea on how to end the end, and if it were not…

Despite the plot which has been done before (most notably on television series "The Twilight Zone" and "The Prisoner"), "The Truman Show" manages to surprise and delight. The clever screenplay by "Gattaca" scripter Andrew Niccol plays up on the inherent phoniness of televised drama with a very sly and subversive sense of humor. The script is also engaging in its emotional dynamic of Truman having his world unraveled around him, and choosing between risking his own life for freedom, or to stay content in the world's most comfortable prison. However, unlike the bloated "Godzilla", "The Truman Show" ends too quickly without giving a chance to thoroughly explore the…

Americans wanted to own the same expensive objects and do the same things as their friends or neighbors because they were worried about seeming less important socially than they were (Cambridge dictionary) and shows like, “The Truman show,” re-enforced that feeling; fictional viewers of, “The Truman show,” wanted to live a stable life the way Truman does, own the same house, eat the same food, have the same wife. The man in a bathtub that appears on several occasions throughout the film is the best example of a, “hooked audience,” as he is completely drawn into the show; the media has absolute control over him. Every move and emotion that Truman made and experienced in the show in some way or another translated straight into the bathtub man’s beahviour. He lived through Truman’s life as he slept and ate at the same time the protagonist did. “The media are powerful tools,” that are, “able to influence consumers’ sentiments and aspirations,” and that is exactly what Weir was trying to portray by filming the fictional viewers’ reaction to the show (Vanessaairie).…

Sir Thomas More once defined a utopia as an imagined place or state of things in which everything is perfect. The Truman Show depicts the life of Truman Burbank in an effort to satisfy Christof the director’s vision of a perfect community. Of course though utopia is only desirable if everyone living there shares the same definition of perfection and it's evident throughout the movie that utopia just isn’t the word to describe Seahaven Island. More like a dystopia considering the fact that majority of the film is spent with Truman searching for explanations to weird things happening and trying desperately to escape. Truman eventually does succeed in escaping and recently an interview was conducted.…
