In Cold Blood, by Truman Capote, is a book about a murder of an innocent family for money. This book walks you step by step through the murders and what the killers did. In Cold Blood has been banned and challenged in done school libraries because of violence, profanity, and sexual context. Although In Cold Blood, by Truman Capote, has violence, profanity, and sexual context, it should stay in libraries because it is a masterpiece about true life crime. Truman Capote researches this murder so in-depth, than writes such a beautiful story, it should not be banned for school libraries. Capote uses the language in the book for a reason. When Perry says, “I thought of that goddamn dollar.” (Capote), Capote is trying to get the point across that Perry is frustrated and annoyed by that one dollar coin. If Capote had just said, “I thought of that dollar.”, there is not the same impact. Language is used for a reason, that reason is not to teach kids to say cuss words.
“The unlawful compelling of a person through physical force or duress to have sexual intercourse.” (Rape). Dick talks about wanting to rape Nancy Clutter before he kills her. Dick also talks about rapeing a girl at the beach in Mexico. Parents believe that children should not be reading about rape while in school. They claim it is too graphic and not something their kid needs to learn about. Capote does not go into detail about rapeing either of the two girls he just mentions the idea. Even though there is no details of rapeing, parents do not want the book in libraries.
The idea of raping either of these girls is briefly mentioned in the book. Capote writes that Dick wanted to rape the girls, but he did not. Just because an idea is mentioned, doesn’t mean the whole book should be banned. Capote is just trying to retell the murder and what the killers wanted and what they did after.
