In plays, characters can be used to convey messages that the author is trying to get across. A famous poet that conveys this message is William Shakespeare. In the play, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, four lovers contend each other to show the importance of love. Particularly Lysander and Hermia, who want to marry each other. The quote “The course of true love never did run smooth” is a matter of fact, one of the most important quotes in the play, explain how love has many obstacles. In A Midsummer Night’s Dream, the obstacle of true love’s course is Egeus. Egeus, Hermia’s father, refuses to let Lysander marry Hermia. When Egeus won’t let Hermia marry Lysander, a problem arises. This problem is caused by the Athens rule saying a girl has to marry a man of her father’s choice. Hermia’s father wants her to marry Demetrius but she wants to marry Lysander. This is when Egeus leads Demetrius, Hermia, and Lysander to the court where the duke of Athens is, Theseus. Egeus brings the lovers to the court so Theseus would enforce the law of making his daughter marry who he wants. At the end of the argument, Theseus gave Hermia three choices. The three choices were to either marry Demetrius, become a nun, or get killed. This is an obstacle because even though the love by Demetrius is fairly simple, it does not have true love which is why it is not meant to be. Meanwhile, Hermia and Lysander are facing the obstacles of Egeus, Athenian law, and Demetrius's love to Hermia. He decides to go to the woods because that is outside of Athens and a place where they can get married. Hermia agreeing with this plan, decides they will go out to the woods tomorrow night. They are going to the woods because Lysander’s aunt, who is a widow, lives out there and they can marry there (Shakespeare, page 17). At first, this plan seems as if nothing could go wrong. Meanwhile, things go wrong the instance they tell Helena about their plan. Since Demetrius loves Hermia and Helena loves Demetrius, Helena thinks it will be a good idea to tell Demetrius of their plan. Helena thinks that by telling Demetrius of their plan, he will like her more and maybe even marry her. Consequently, Helena’s plan goes accordingly as planned and Demetrius chases Hermia into the woods. Since Demetrius went to chase Hermia in the woods, Helena wanted to chase Demetrius. Demetrius said to Helena, “I love thee not, therefore pursue me not” (Shakespeare, 47). Demetrius getting frustrated at Helena for loving him, and is giving her reasons he doesn’t like her. Meanwhile, Hermia is in the same situation because of Demetrius liking her but he still doesn’t understand how Helena feels. Helena is chasing Demetrius into the woods while Demetrius is chasing Hermia into the woods. Demetrius says that he gets sick when he looks at Helena’s face.
