Mattie Ross is a young 14 year old girl, who lived on a small farm. He does as much as he can in order to get Mattie to the doctor, including making the horse they were riding suffer, putting salt in his wound, and he ended up killing the horse that they were riding to get Mattie help. He did all of those things to make the horse go faster for Mattie’s sake. He says “I shot him and when the old man swung the ax i shot him. Odus lit out for the creek and I shot him.”(pg48). So, he shoots people more than once. It always seems that his reasons for shooting are reputable, in the name of self defense or otherwise. He went up against 7 people in war, and he was also brave enough to go into the cave after Mattie. He shows over and over his bravery, meaning that he does display True Grit. Another example of his bravery and integrity is that he stood up to Leboeuf when Mattie has asked for his help. He says here “Put that switch down Leboeuf! Do you hear me Talking to you?”.
