Grit Is Alive Who has true grit, would you make it out alive? True Grit is a Western novel based in the 1800’s, and the author is Charles Portis. There are three lead roles, including Mattie Ross is a 14 year old girl who is set out to avenge her father’s death. The killer, Tom Chaney a some what witty, sly, con-man and a killer. Rooster Cogburn a civil war hero, a man who displays affection that very few people in the his time would. Ill explain my idea ion true grit in the following.
Mattie Ross is a young 14 year old girl, who lived on a small farm. Her father was a caring man, who put Tom C to work on their farm, only later for Tom to shoot him dead and loot his body for anything everything. “I am here to take you back to Fort Smith.” (178). He does as much as he can in order to get Mattie to the doctor, including making the horse they were riding suffer, putting salt in his wound, and he ended up killing the horse that they were riding to get Mattie help. He did all of those things to make the horse go faster for Mattie’s sake. He says “I shot him and when the old man swung the ax i shot him. Odus lit out for the creek and I shot him.”(pg48). So, he shoots people more than once. It always seems that his reasons for shooting are reputable, in the name of self defense or otherwise. He went up against 7 people in war, and he was also brave enough to go into the cave after Mattie. He shows over and over his bravery, meaning that he does display True Grit. Another example of his bravery and integrity is that he stood up to Leboeuf when Mattie has asked for his help. He says here “Put that switch down Leboeuf! Do you hear me Talking to you?”. This shows that rather than anger getting the best of him, he chose to stand up for what he feels is right, without backing down. He protected Mattie, once
