What the statement is saying is that the beginning of an event is great or it is okay, but what is better is when the event has ended. It can be applied to literature by looking at how the characters felt at the beginning of the novel as compared to how they felt at the ends. Also one could look at the book as a whole and its actual beginning and ending and say that the ending is better because that it where the problems are solved and wrapped up. The two books have similar moods at the ending and beginning, but the moods created at the end actually solve the problematic moods in the begining. In One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich the tone was very abrupt and sympathetic, becasue Shukhov was disoriented and thinking about what he could do to get more money, how he did not feel well, and how he hoped it was cold enough that the camp did not have to work. At the end of the novel, Shukhov had recovered from his sickness, earned more money and got extra food, and worked in a better area than some of the other workers. At the beginning of The Stranger, Meursault was told that his mother had died and the funeral would be happening in the next couple of days. Meursault reported the news choppily, which shows he was more affected by the news than he would have liked to been with sadness, as he believed no one had a right to cry over his Maman. At the end of the novel, Meursault concludes that death is the only common for all people, and there is no way to fight against it as death is inevitable. Death is the whole world’s reason for living, which verifies his theory that nothing matters, resolves his life problem of finding a reason to live, and brings closure to him pondering the death of his mother.
